FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Why is partially hydrogenated oil still stated on the majority of labels?
Our primary objective in our reformulation effort was to decrease the trans fat level to less than 0.5 grams per serving which is considered a trivial amount and is declared as 0grams on the label. We are using a specially processed partially hydrogenated oil with a very low level of trans fat.  This provides the functional and sensory characteristics that are desirable in baked products.

2. Is there a plan to completely eliminate partially hydrogenated oil?
Not at this time. The low level of trans in the partially hydrogenated oil allows us to provide products with the same texture and eating quality as our original formulations while minimally affecting saturated fat levels. We chose not to use a highly saturated fat such as hydrogenated palm oil which can be equally detrimental to a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

3. Can the new lower trans products be called “trans fat free”?
No. The FDA does not allow this language. They are not technically trans fat free but do comply with the requirement for 0 grams trans fat per serving.
